A beautifully prepared dish tells a story before the first bite. As a food photographer serving Portland, Oregon, Vancouver, Washington, and the surrounding area, my goal is to capture that story—showcasing the ingredients, textures, and thoughtful presentation that make a chef’s work distinctive.
I recently photographed this chargrilled Spanish octopus with salsa macha and fingerling potatoes at sámn, a new restaurant at ilani in Ridgefield, Washington. Its seafood-focused approach to coastal dining provides plenty of inspiration, both on the plate and behind the camera.
Highlighting the Chef’s Artistry
What I appreciated most about this dish was the chef’s artistry. Each element contributed to its character, and I wanted the photograph to reflect that care.
My approach was to emphasize the octopus’s chargrilled texture, the details of the salsa macha, and the way the fingerling potatoes complemented the presentation. The goal was to create an appetizing image while preserving the individuality of the dish and the chef’s vision.
For me, that is one of the most rewarding parts of restaurant photography: translating the care that goes into preparing a meal into an image that makes someone pause and want to taste it.
Restaurant Photography for Portland and Vancouver
For restaurants, food photography often creates a guest’s first impression. Whether someone discovers a dish on your website, through social media, or while browsing an online menu, compelling photographs can help communicate the quality and personality of your food.
At Paul Rich Studio, I provide food and restaurant photography throughout Portland, OR, Vancouver, WA, and the surrounding communities. My focus is on creating images that highlight what makes your menu—and your restaurant—worth discovering.
