Marlene & Paul | October 15, 2011

Marlene and Paul were married on October 15, 2011 at the First Unitarian Church in downtown Portland.  Family members arrived early to assist with setup and everything was going smoothly.  Conversation started circulating about an Occupy Portland march that was going on and how it may impact guest’s ability to arrive to the church on time.  I stepped outside for a moment to grab some exterior shots of the church when all of a sudden, I noticed the Occupy Portland crowd heading toward the church.  As they say, “Always expect the unexpected on the wedding day.”  This was certainly the case but additionally made for a memorable moment to the day.  The march continued on peacefully and gave lots to talk about, but most importantly, the wedding continued on time and without interruption.

During the reception, Paul took a moment to thank all of the guests for attending the wedding and then surprised Marlene by singing her a song.  He really got into it and had the guests laughing and singing in unison.  Congratulations to Marlene & Paul!

Allegra & Rick | October 1, 2011

Allegra & Rick had a very adventurous outdoor wedding at the wonderful Bridal Veil Lakes in Corbett, OR.  The day started off with what appeared to be about a 50/50 chance of rain.  The rain was light enough that Allegra & Rick were able to have their first moment and portraits together in all the great locations throughout the property.  Guests arrived, some with umbrellas and some without, and found their seats for the ceremony.  Allegra was walked by her father along the long row of trees across the back side of the lake for a grand entrance to start the ceremony.  The timing was perfect and the setting was absolutely gorgeous.

As Allegra & Rick exchanged their vows, the light sprinkle of rain turned a bit heavy and by the time of their first kiss, the rain was really coming down.  It made for a very dramatic exit with the couple laughing and enjoying the classic Northwest rain.  What more can you expect right?  Then came the decision of whether or not to stay with the original plan of riding across the lake in a canoe.  But if you know Allegra & Rick, you know the decision was already made in advance.  So, the couple made their way to the canoe and journeyed across the lake to the other side where guests eagerly awaited their arrival.  Many had their cameras out capturing the most adventurous couple.  The rain was really coming down and Allegra & Rick had their special moment together riding in a canoe.

We met Allegra & Rick through Melissa & Matt (whose wedding we photographed at the very same location just a year before).  Melissa & Matt’s wedding has been seen by many as it was featured on Style Unveiled.  But what was really neat, was that Matt officiated the wedding!  How many people can say they have officiated a wedding at the same location that they were married?

Congratulations to Allegra & Rick!  See more highlights from the wedding by checking out this sneak peek slideshow.

Becky & Greg | September 18, 2011

I met Becky & Greg in February of 2010 to begin discussing their plans for an August 2010 wedding.  The plan was to have the wedding on August 22, 2010 at her sister’s residence and to have the reception at the Portland Art Museum.  Weeks after meeting with the couple, I received an email from Becky:

Hi Paul,

I wanted to write to you and let you know what’s going on with me. I was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago. I have a surgery scheduled for a week from Friday and it is more than likely that I will undergo chemo and radiation in the coming months. We have absolutely no idea how this will effect our wedding plans…I just wanted you to be aware. We haven’t made any decisions yet and probably won’t for a few more weeks or months as we know more information.  Just so you know, we want you to be part of our day however it goes!  I’ll of course be in touch as I know more.

Regards,
Becky:)

I was so saddened by the news and wanted to do anything I could to make their wedding day exactly what they wanted.  The plan was to re-schedule the wedding for a future date but then even more news came…  I asked Becky to detail her experiences leading up to her wedding celebration and she had this to say:

Greg and I got engaged in October 2009 and planned to get married in August, 2010. We were so excited to get married in my sister’s backyard and have a big party at the Portland Art Museum. However, on Feb. 23, 2010, our life turned upside down when I was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 35. I had two surgeries in two months followed by three months of chemotherapy. We decided to postpone our wedding exactly one year so I would have energy and hair! The year was really difficult but the wedding provided us with something to look forward to. Three weeks after my final surgery in December, my father was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma. The doctors urged us to move up the wedding to make sure my dad would be there and be strong. So, we got married on April 17, 2011 in Seattle with our best friends and close family surrounding us. We still wanted to celebrate with our friends and got to do just that on September 18, 2011 in my sister’s backyard. My mom and dad were there and the whole night was magical. Thank you to Paul Rich for being so flexible with us in changing the dates so many times! I am now cancer free with a new curly hairdo. Though the journey was difficult, it has taught us that life is full of surprises and it is important to celebrate the good times, which we got to do… twice!

What an incredible journey leading up to Becky & Greg’s wedding and what an incredible honor to have the opportunity to document this momentous event.  Becky & Greg opted to have their wedding celebration on September 18, 2011.  It was also the same day at the Susan G Komen Race for the Cure in downtown Portland.  So Becky & Greg and their close friends and family had the opportunity to participate in the event in the morning and then celebrate their marriage in the evening.  Congratulations to Becky & Greg.  You did it!

I would like to thank Champagne Wedding & Events, 3 Leg Torso, and all the vendors who played an integral role in making the day a huge success.

Thank you Paul for memorializing my sister’s wedding so beautifully. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words (although I really like what you wrote in the blog too).
Thank you for pairing the Race for the cure t-shirt with the wedding dress–it is the perfect juxtaposition, showing so clearly what Becky and Greg have gone through. The evening was wonderful all around and we thank you for the gorgeous pictures!!!

Marisa - October 13, 2011 - 7:56 pm

It was such a beautiful and meaningful wedding and these photos (and I’m sure many others) captured it elegantly and with great humor. That’s perfect for Becky and Greg, two elegant people with GREAT humor and love amongst them.

Emma & Pascal | September 4, 2011

It has been a few years since we have photographed a wedding at Mt Hood Bed & Breakfast and it was so fun to see all of the updates they have done to the property.  If you are looking for a rustic location for your wedding that provides your guests with a unique Northwest experience, this is the place.  Emma and Pascal exchanged their vows out on the front lawn in hopes of eventually seeing Mt Hood in the background.  Unfortunately, due to weather patterns, the mountain never made its grand entrance.  However, the setting is so breath-taking that it easily goes unnoticed.

Following the ceremony, guests enjoyed cocktails amongst a setting of horses, tall grass, oscillating sprinklers, and gorgeous flowers.  It was a perfect summer afternoon.  Dinner was served in the back area of the property with catering provided by Simpatica Catering.  Make sure to check out some of the food shots below.  You’ll get a great sense of Simpatica’s artistry.

Thank you to all the vendors for making the event a huge success and congratulations to Emma & Pascal!

Lauren & Jameson | September 3, 2011

Meriwether’s Skyline Farm is one of our favorite locations to photograph.  The sweeping views, relaxed atmosphere, and scrumptuous food all combine to make Meriwether’s an incredible experience.  Guests arrived to the venue by bus, enjoyed a nice glass of wine, and then made their way over to the ceremony area.  Lauren and Jameson exchanged their vows and then gave a toast to their guests.  It was the perfect way to set the tone for an evening of celebration.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered around for a fun group photo.  It marked the beginning of cocktail hour and mingling throughout the property.  There are so many wonderful sights, sounds, and smells to take in.  There was a lot of chatter about the local forest fires and that dramatic sunset that they would produce.  And as the sun set lower in the sky, I have to say, it was one of the most dramatic sunsets I have seen in a long time.  It made for a beautiful backdrop during toasts, cake cutting, and dancing.

Congratulations to Lauren and Jameson.  Check out even more highlights by viewing their wedding slideshow.
