Columbia Gorge Engagement Session

One of our favorite locations for an engagement session is the Columbia Gorge.  There is a stretch of road called the Columbia Historic Highway that follows along the Gorge.  It brings you to a number of waterfalls that are just a short hike from the road.  This enables us to capture a number of stunning locations in a relatively short period of time.  We typically meet couples a few hours before sunset at Horsetail Falls.  We then work our way along the Columbia Historic Highway stopping at locations like the Oneonta Gorge, the iconic Multnomah Falls, Latourell Falls, and spots in between.  We then work our way up to the Vista House at Crown Point just as the sun begins to set for some final dramatic images to conclude the evening.  A Columbia Gorge engagement session takes full advantage of what the Pacific Northwest has to offer.  The lighting is dramatic and the settings are absolutely stunning.

As a quick technical side note, we have hopelessly fallen in love with a piece of lighting gear known as the ProFoto B2.  It is responsible for the more dramatic artificial lighting in these images.  It is extremely rare for a piece of equipment to impact the way you shoot as dramatically as the ProFoto B2 has done for me.  I am forever grateful for it and I enjoy the creative freedom it brings to my work.

Columbia Gorge Engagement Session

The Columbia Gorge is easily among our favorite locations to capture engagement sessions for couples getting married in the Pacific Northwest.  We typically meet couples along the Historic Columbia Gorge Highway and hike to a small handful of waterfalls leading up to Crown Point at sunset.  It allows for a number of great backdrops for portraits and truly captures the essence of the Columbia River Gorge area.  For this Columbia Gorge engagement session, we began at Horsetail Falls and continued along to the Oneonta Gorge, the iconic Multnomah Falls, Wahkeena Falls, and then trekked up to Crown Point in time for a very dramatic sunset.

The couple truly enjoyed the session and the opportunity to explore numerous waterfalls.  We hand selected a number of portraits from the session and designed a custom signature album for their wedding day.  It was a HUGE hit with guests!

Here are some of our favorites from this Columbia Gorge engagement session:

Schuyler & Stormy | Engagement Session

I met up with Schuyler and Stormy at the location where they met exactly one year ago at Holladay Park in Portland, OR.  July 11th will forever remain a very special date for them.  Schuyler and Stormy met on this day in 2015, had their engagement photos captured on this day in 2016, and will get married on this day in 2017!  During the engagement session, we strolled the park and spent some time just hanging out having fun.  We made sure to capture some portraits of the couple at the exact location where they met in the park.  Then, toward the end of the session, we climbed up to the roof top of a parking garage and captured some more dramatic images including a unique shot of the couple kissing with Mt Hood in the background.

Here are some of our favorites from their recent engagement session at Holladay Park.

Yacht Themed Engagement Session

Tiffany and Kirk spend a lot of time out on the water especially during the summer months when there is no better time to be out on the yacht.  So Tiffany wanted to make sure to incorporate lots of water, boats, and bridges in their engagement photos.  I suggested that we meet by the Riverplace Hotel which has a spectacular view overlooking a marina.  There is also a walkway that leads down onto the water itself and offers a spectacular view of some of Portland’s bridges.

Toward the later part of the afternoon we made our way over to the Columbia River Yacht Club where Kirk docks his boat.  We climbed on board and headed out onto the water leaving all the hustle and bustle of the city behind us.  It made the perfect setting to capture Tiffany and Kirk in their element.  We were able to capture exactly what they were looking for: water, boats, and bridges.  The image of the two of them toward the front of the yacht looking at each other with the bridge in the background is my favorite from the series.

To help our couples maximize the investment they make in hiring a professional wedding photographer, we provide our couples with a complimentary What to Wear Guide for Engagement Sessions.  Tiffany loved the suggestions in the guide and it inspired her to bring a red jacket (for a pop of color) and to do an outfit change for the images on the yacht to follow more of a nautical theme.  I thought her choice in a deep navy color that coordinated both of their outfits was absolutely superb.

Our What to Wear Guide is intended to offer helpful tips and suggestions on what to wear for your upcoming session.  To download your free copy, simply click on the What to Wear Guide link above (the download time will vary based on your internet speed).

If you are reading this on a mobile device, please email us to request the guide and we will send it to you directly: paul@paulrichstudio.com

We hope you find the suggestions in the guide helpful in preparing for your upcoming session.

Downtown Portland Engagement Session

Lauren and Michael moved to Portland from Wisconsin just a few months ago.  To get the full Portland experience, they moved into the downtown area and are literally just steps away from all that this great city has to offer.  During the evenings after dinner, they often head outside and stroll the downtown area.  There is no better way to get to know a city.  So naturally, it only made sense to capture their engagement photos in their new city.

We met up at Jamison Square in the Pearl District to begin the session.  And much in the way that they spend their evenings, we strolled the area and captured various portraits of them together enjoying downtown Portland.  It is one of my favorite areas to photograph in Portland.

I wanted to also offer Lauren and Michael a nice shot of the city in the background.  I know of some great areas on the SE side of the city that offer spectacular views of the Portland skyline especially at night.  So we waited for the sun to set, hopped in our cars, and headed over to the SE side for one more round of photos.  By altering the color temperature of my flashes, I was able to produce a more dramatic look to their evening shots of the city.

Lauren and Michael will be hosting their wedding day celebration at the Riverplace Hotel in August this year.  We are looking forward to re-connecting with the couple then and witnessing all their guests enjoy the spectacular views as Lauren and Michael exchange their vows up on the rooftop of the hotel.

Tenley & Adam | Engagement Session

We recently caught up with Tenley and Adam for their engagement session.  They are getting married in July 2016 at the Leftbank Annex.

Tenley and Adam very much wanted to incorporate a mural or two into their photos during the session.  They also have a connection to the SE Portland area and really enjoy the local parks.  So, I suggested that we meet at Laurelhurst Park to begin the session and stop off at the mural on 50th and SE Hawthorne while on our way up to Mt Tabor.  This provided us with 3 different locations and a variety of backdrops and settings to play with.

Here are a handful of highlights from Tenley and Adam’s engagement session.

Ashlyn & Chad | Engagement Session

One of our favorite locations to capture engagement sessions is on Sauvie Island.  Just a few minutes drive from the hustle and bustle of downtown Portland is a wonderfully peaceful location for couples to spend time together.

Ashlyn and Chad are getting married in January of 2016 at the Benson Hotel and wanted to capture their engagement photos in a different setting than their wedding.  This is something we always recommend to our couples as a way of creating greater variety in the work they receive.  It is fun to change up the setting and even the time of year of when your engagement photos are captured as opposed to your wedding photos.

Ashlyn and Chad’s engagement session was incredibly fun.  The late day sun provided perfect light and the rustic setting worked really well with the attire they chose.  Ashlyn and Chad brought some tequila to the session, so about mid-way through the session after changing into a different outfit, the three of us took a couple of tequila shots.

From the moment I met with Ashlyn and her mom during our initial consultation, I knew right away that this was a couple I very much wanted to work with.  Ashlyn and Chad’s love for each other is incredibly infectious and I am so excited to have the opportunity to document this exciting milestone in their lives as a couple.

Here are some of our favorite moments from Ashlyn and Chad’s engagement session on Sauvie Island:
