Baby’s First Year Portraits

There are a number of ways to capture a baby’s first year.  It is such an exciting time to document given how much changes in such a short period of time.  While maternity and newborn sessions are most popular, many couples additionally add a 6 and 12 month session as well.  Others choose a really fun option of capturing their little one every month from newborn through 12 months.  Based on scheduling, we offer a limited number of these sessions each year.

To see the finished product of what is created from a monthly Baby’s First Year package, check out the highlight we posted from a recent First Year Session.  It is by far one of the coolest services/products we offer.

We have just begun a monthly First Year Session for the same family but this time for their newborn son.  I cannot wait to be able to view each child’s monthly portrait session.  To start the journey, here is the maternity session to kick off this incredible photographic journey.  Make sure to check back often for updates.  We will be connecting with this family every month.

Love them all!

Peninsula Park 6 Month Session

Here is a family who should look very familiar.  They have appeared on our blog many times dating back to 2010 when we photographed their destination wedding in Oahu.  We have since photographed anniversary portrait sessions, maternity sessions, newborn sessions, and other portrait sessions together as a family.

We recently photographed a 6 month session for baby Nola as part of her Baby’s First Year that includes a maternity session, newborn session, 6 month and 12 month session.  Given the number of sessions we have captured, we make sure to choose a new location each time.  Our most recent portrait shoot for Nola’s 6 month session was held at Peninsula Park in NE Portland.  We had perfect weather and connected at just the right time with nap schedules.  We are looking forward to Nola’s 1 year session coming soon!

Rhododendron Garden Senior Portraits

There is so much energy and excitement surrounding the senior year in high school.  The big countdown to graduation is on, and for many, what college or career path to pursue comes into focus.  So, while capturing senior portraits, I always enjoy hearing everyone’s unique plans.

One of my favorite locations to capture senior portraits is the Crystal Springs Rhododendron Garden.  There are plenty of locations throughout the garden to capture a nice variety of images including an iconic bridge, multiple walking paths, and plenty of benches and seating areas.  I recommend photographing toward the later part of the day when the sun streams through the garden.

Bat Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Israel

Tess held her Bat Mitzvah at Congregation Beth Israel and had an evening celebration at Punch Bowl Social.  The weather allowed us the opportunity to capture portraits outdoors as well as indoors at the bima.  Tess practiced reading the Torah in advance of the ceremony and successfully completed her Bat Mitzvah.

Friends and family members gathered at Punch Bowl Social later in the evening for a night filled with fun and fanfare.  Henna artists and a fun photo booth setup were available as additional entertainment to all the video games, shuffle board, bowling, darts, and karaoke options.  It was a fun-filled evening of celebration.

Family Portraits at Home

I feel so incredibly fortunate to have met and photographed so many couples and families over the years.  Having been in business for over 10 years, I have even had the opportunity to photograph some families many times over.  Oftentimes, a couple will contact me in regards to their wedding which will then lead to a maternity session, a newborn session, holiday portrait sessions, and more.  It is incredibly fun and rewarding to have the opportunity to document peoples’ lives.

Because I have been in business for so many years, I don’t spend a lot of time advertising my business.  Referals from my clients provide me with plenty of work and each year that I photograph new clients, it further leads to even more clients.  It is something that I didn’t fully realize in my earlier years but it is something that I am certainly very grateful for as it has propelled my business to levels I could never have forseen.

Although I do not advertise very much nowadays, I do intermittently use a service called Thumbtack for sourcing new clients.  It is a really neat concept that matches service providers with individuals needing a certain task completed.  It is most popular for individuals needing a plumber, carpenter, or even general handyman services.  But it is also used for sourcing a wedding or family portrait photographer as well.

About a year or so ago, I received an inquiry through Thumbtack of a family who had just recently moved to Portland and who were wanting family portraits captured.  Being a transplant from the Boston area myself, I could easily relate to the awe and wonderment of living in the Pacific Northwest for the first time.  We captured their family portraits on Sauvie Island and as the weather turned bad, we headed to my photography studio for some additional portraits inside.  Then, most recently, the same family contacted me again for some updated family portraits with the addition of their new daughter.

The family requested to have the portrait session at their home and to then capture some additional portraits by a rustic red barn that was within walking distance to their house.  They are absolutely the sweetest family and both of their daughters are such a treat to photograph.  They offered us a handful of tomatoes from their garden and were eager to make plans for another family session in the future.  I am so grateful to have met this wonderful family and I look forward to documenting their family in the years to come.  There is no greater honor than to see the images I have captured, hung on the walls of their home.

Peninsula Park Family Portraits

You may have noticed that we have fallen behind a bit on our blogging and social media efforts toward the later part of 2017.  It is not due to a lack of work but rather to an over abundance of work.  Our goal is to provide quick turnaround times on the work we create for our clients.  We know how exciting it is to receive the images from your session as quickly as possible.  So that is where we exert our greatest efforts.

What this means is other aspects of our business can take longer – such as blogging.  With the frigid temps we are experiencing this week, you will get a true glimpse of how far back we need to reach to catch up on our blogging efforts.  I am embarrassed (and actually quite proud) that we turn toward the later part of the summer to update everyone on the work we created this year.  Our goal is to try to blog all the work we are sitting on from 2017 and to then put together a “Best Of 2017” post that highlights all of our favorite sessions throughout the year.  We have really diversified the work we create to extend well beyond weddings and family portraits and we are excited to share that work with you.

If you have read through our blog, you know that some of the most exciting work we create is when working with surrogates and their intended parents.  We have photographed newborn sessions of babies who have been born through surrogacy.  We have also photographed the families of surrogates along with their intended parents and their newborn children.  We have photographed live birth sessions too.  Just like with weddings, working with surrogates creates a unique and special bond with our clients.  And the relationships that are fostered creates a reputation for us within the surrogate community.

Michelle is a surrogate who contacted us asking for some portraits of her with her immediate family while she was pregnant.  She wanted to capture this unique time in her family where she was carrying a child for another couple.  And of course, it was a great time to get all the cousins together too.

We met at Peninsula Park in NE Portland for some outdoor family portraits.  The location is easily accessible and offers a number of great backdrops for portraits including an iconic water feature.  Here are some of our favorites from the family portrait session at Peninsula park.
