Vendor Spotlight | CK Wedding & Event Design

We are extremely excited for Chelsea & Kayla with CK Wedding & Event Design on the opening of their brand new office location.  To celebrate the momentous occasion, this dynamic duo held an extremely fun Open House event.  As Portland wedding planners, they have worked tirelessly designing and creating their new space and it is absolutely gorgeous.

They came over to our studio recently for some professional headshots and we had a chance to catch up with them just before their big Open House event.  As we head into the wedding season, we wanted to share with our readers a bit more about Portland wedding planners Chelsea & Kayla:

What advice would you give a couple that just got engaged?

Kayla: Breathe. Take a deep breath before you dive head first into planning. Also, do your research and trust your gut! The process should be fun and exciting for you and your fiancé, don’t get lost in it!

Chelsea: Take your time! Really think about everything and what is the most important to you about that day! There is no need to rush the planning process. It is one day and it goes by so fast. So enjoy every moment about it!

How did you get started?

Kayla: I fell in love with the idea of working weddings when Chelsea and I were roommates. She worked at the Abernathy Center and would bring home the most gorgeous flower arrangements…. And cake, a lot of cake!!! J

Chelsea: I have always been in love with weddings. In elementary school there was a magazine sale and I begged my mom to buy a subscription to Brides magazine. I would sit for hours just looking through the bridal magazines, imagining people’s weddings and how I would plan them. In college I was really able to experience the wedding industry and haven’t looked back!

What makes CK different?

Kayla & Chelsea: We build a true relationship with our clients! We are best friends and we value our friendship. We have put our heart and souls into this business and I believe the clients can see that.

Describe your style

Kayla: Clean, fun, and evolving

Chelsea: chic, inspiring, and energetic

Outside of weddings what is your favorite thing to do?

Kayla: Going out to dinner with my husband! Someday our daughter will be added into that but she is 3, and anyone with a 3yr old can agree with me when I say that she is not the most fun to dine with. :p

Chelsea: Spending time with my husband and our two dogs, love taking the time on weekends to enjoy everything that Portland has to offer! I’m always up for girl time though! I LOVE getting pampered with manicures and pedicures and drinking champagne of course!

What or who motivates you?

Kayla: At this point in my life Harper, my daughter is my biggest motivator. I want to make her proud and I want her to see what a true boss lady looks like!

Chelsea: My husband! We met when we were getting our bachelors degree then went and got our masters together! Experiencing all that together gives me the motivation to better myself and reach all my goals!

Izak Turns 1

I absolutely love documenting 12 month sessions.  It is the perfect age for capturing portraits.  Little ones are taking some of their first steps and exploring everything the exciting world has to offer.  It is easy to elicit a smile and the results are always incredibly fun.

I have had the opportunity to document Izak in the past, but this session was among my favorites.  He had just woken from a nap and was ready for an adventure.  The timing was perfect.  And having one of the cutest outfits on helped a lot too.  Izak always dresses so stylishly.

Here are some of our favorites from Izak’s 1 year session:

Customer Appreciation Weekend

We absolutely love our Portland photography studio.  After years and years of focusing on weddings, we have expanding our photography services to include family portraits.  More and more of our clients asked us to capture their growing families and so it only made sense to build and launch a Portland photography studio.

Photographing outdoors is what we love to do most but the unpredictable weather and comfort of newborns and little ones necessitates a photography studio.  When couples are looking for more privacy for their maternity sessions or wanting a cozy setting like a studio for their newborn, we wanted to be able to provide some options.

The new photography studio has beautiful filtered natural light that streams through a bank of windows and we are outfitted with an array of studio lights and contemporary backdrops.  We are able to achieve a lot of variety in the look and style of our work created in the photography studio.

To celebrate the launch of our new Portland photography studio, we offered a complimentary portrait session to all our clients during a recent Customer Appreciation Weekend Event.  It was an opportunity to introduce everyone to our new space in NE Portland.  Make sure to come by and check out our new space.

To officially reserve your family portrait session outdoors or at our new photography studio, make sure to email us directly at: paul@paulrichstudio.com

Thanks for a great shoot!

Fundraising Ideas

We donate a number of family portrait sessions to various nonprofit organizations throughout the Portland area to assist in their fundraising events.  The portrait sessions are typically a rather hot item at the auctions and help raise money for organizations like the MDA, the ALS Association, and others.  We also donate family portrait sessions to local theater companies and schools as well.

We were extremely excited when one of our previous wedding clients contacted us from having purchased a portrait session at a recent auction event.  They recognized our name, obviously knew our work, and placed the winning bid on a family portrait session.  We photographed Amy & Scott’s wedding back in 2012 and we photographed her sister Holly’s wedding back in 2008!  It was so neat to connect with all of them again for a family portrait session.

Here are a few of our favorites from this most recent family portrait session in Portland:

6 Month Session in San Mateo, CA

While I have flown to many locations like Mexico, St Lucia, and Hawaii for weddings, I have never flown before for a family portrait session.

Lindsay & Clayton hired me to capture their baby daughter’s first year with a maternity, newborn, 6 month, and 12 month session.  They were living in Portland when their daughter was born, but since moved to beautiful sunny San Mateo, CA.  So, when they asked if I would fly down to CA for the day to capture their daughter’s 6 month session, I emphatically said “YES”!

I packed all my camera equipment and portrait gear and grabbed an early flight down to CA.  I landed around 9:30am and Clayton picked me up at the airport while Jenny and the kids made their way to a local park.  We fought through a bit of traffic (I know surprise, surprise), and made our way to the park.  Within just a few short minutes, I was already behind the camera snapping away.  I knew my time with them was finite with a flight out at 5pm later that day and enough time for lunch and a decent sized nap (for the kids, not me).  And it all worked out perfectly.  We photographed at the park until the 6 month old showed signs of being sleepy.  We wrapped things up and headed back to the house for lunch and nap time.  When the two little ones awoke from their nap, I had already setup a backdrop for another round of photos.  This gave us the flexibility of creating work that felt like it was captured in a studio (the black backdrop), as well as images that were captured outdoors at a park and in the setting of the home.  We were able to create 3 different looks.

I broke down the background kit, packed up my bags, and made my way back to the airport for my flight.  I landed, headed back home, and was eating dinner that night by 7:30pm.  It felt like the perfect work day mixed in with a little mini-vaca.

Here are some of our favorites from the family portrait session in CA:
