As a professional wedding photographer, I spend a considerable amount of time planning and preparing for my photo shoots. This, among other things, gives me the creative freedom to be spontaneous.
When you don’t have to worry about logistics you can focus on what matters the most. For me, it is capturing the moments that best express the spirit and love that exists between a couple.
When planning Lisa & Tuffy’s Portland engagement session, I pre-planned and charted out a course that capitalized on the fact that we would be shooting toward the later part of the day. Lisa & Tuffy requested to have photos of them in the evening by some of Portland’s most iconic signs. Knowing that we would be tailoring their photo session toward the later part of the day, I suggested that we meet in downtown Portland by the Saturday Market area to take advantage of some late day sun. My pre-planning afforded us the ability to work quickly and efficiently thus maximizing the total number of images captured.
From the Saturday Market area, we then headed to some of Portland’s famous bridges as a backdrop. As we entered into twilight, we began our way toward the Portland sign on Broadway. During our transit to Broadway, however, we were stopped due to a train crossing. It certainly was not in our plan for the evening. However, it afforded us some of the more momentous images from the shoot.
It’s this type of spontaneity mixed with careful planning and preparation that always yields the best results. Here are some of our favorites from Lisa & Tuffy’s downtown Portland engagement session:
