Alix & Ryan | September 1, 2012

The Nines, in downtown Portland, is a wonderful location for wedding day preparations.  The color, the decor, and the magical light all come together to produce great images.  Alix took it one step further by color coordinating her bridesmaid dresses and her shoes to the color scheme of the hotel.  I absolutely love the look and love how the color references Tiffany Blue.

I was very impressed with Alix’s vision for her day.  It carried through from the early day preparations all the way through to the ceremony and the reception at The Aerie at Eagle Landing.  The beautiful uplighting, the decorative candy bar, the gorgeous floral from Blum Floral Design, the zany photo booth, and the groom’s table complete with a nacho cheese fountain and Pabst Blue Ribbon cake all made for a fun and eventful evening.

I remember initially meeting with Alix and her expressing her desire for detail shots.  Little did I know that there would be so many details.  I also recall her mentioning that Ryan is a firefighter and to expect quite the party.  When the 6 pack of Pabst came out onto the dance floor, I knew that the party was just getting started.

Congratulations to Alix and Ryan!  Your wedding was a smashing success and topped off with a great sparkler departure and send off.  Make sure to check out even more highlights from the day by viewing Alix & Ryan’s incredible wedding slideshow.

Amy & Scott | Engagement Session

I recently met up with Amy for a site review in preparation for her October 12th wedding at The Foundry at Oswego Pointe.  Whenever possible, we like to meet up with our couples a week or two before the wedding to do a full walk through of the day.  It gives all of us an opportunity to think through the logistics and to resolve any last minute items that may require additional attention.  My walk through with Amy was a perfect example.

While discussing the layout for the reception area, Amy mentioned wanting to have a print on display by the cake table.  She liked the idea of adding this element to her reception but was concerned that she didn’t really have the best photo to use.  So, I threw out the suggestion of an engagement session.  But more than anything, Amy just wanted a nice photo of her and Scott together.  She didn’t need a full blown 2 hour portrait session.  So, we opted for a more cost effective mini-session.  It fulfills Amy and Scott’s needs for their wedding and at the same time provides them with a handful of extra images as well.

We are happy to provide this level of service and flexibility with all of our couples.    We know how time consuming and challenging it can be to plan and prepare for a wedding.  So, anything we can do to make the process easier – just let us know!

We look forward to working with Amy & Scott on their wedding day and wanted to present just a few highlights from their portrait session.

Puddle Jumpin’ Cards

Every so often we like to do a vendor spotlight to highlight the talents of a particular vendor in the wedding industry.  This vendor spotlight is on Puddle Jumpin’ Cards.  Sunny, the creative genius behind Puddle Jumpin’ Cards, creates incredibly unique custom hand carved and block printed invitations.

With Portland being a market that is saturated with creative types, I wanted to highlight the incredible work that Sunny creates.  It really stands out from the crowd.

We recently met up with Sunny in our photo studio to document a selection of her work.  We sat down with her and had a chance to learn even more about her process and her work:

Paul:  Can you talk about your process a bit – from conceptualization to end product?

Sunny: When I first meet with an engaged couple, we go over their vision and toss ideas around about their custom design. I like to think of the invitation as a blank canvas, and I paint the picture of the couple’s personality and style while setting the tone of their wedding. I send proofs and we refine them until the design is exactly how they imagined it to be (or more)! I love it when the couple gives me creative freedom to explore unique ways of bringing their ideas to life.

Paul: At what time during the wedding planning process should a couple contact you?  In other words, what is a reasonable turnaround time for you?

Sunny: A couple should contact me very soon after their wedding date, venue and approximate invitation count is decided on. When it gets to be 7 months before your wedding and you haven’t decided on an invitation designer, it’s time to crack the whip and get on it!

Paul: What is unique about the product you offer to couples?

Sunny: I specialize in hand carved block prints which is a unique process to offer couples. Each invitation is hand printed after the custom block is carved out. The couple even gets to keep the block after their wedding! I like the idea of framing the block along with the printed invitation. It makes really lovely art for their new home together.

Paul: You primarily make invitations – do you also make table markers, save the dates, etc?

Sunny: I also create wedding day paper goods, such as place cards, escort cards, table numbers, programs and menus. I can design shower and rehearsal dinner invitations as well. It’s fun to tie in one’s theme, color and style in all their paper elements!

Paul: What is your artistic background?

Sunny: I graduated from Northwest College of Art in the quaint town of Poulsbo, Washington. I have a BFA in Visual Communication with majors in fine art and design. My childhood was spent drawing on math papers and coloring on the walls. I love getting the chance to tie my fine art background into invitations by hand painting elements of the design.

Paul: Where can people see more of your work?

Sunny: Aside from wedding invitations, you can find my hand carved and printed card line on my website and at numerous local businesses around Portland, such as: Powell’s City of Books, New Seasons Markets, Kazoodles Toy Store, Oblation Papers and Press, Zim Zim Department Store, AllPort, Annie Bloom’s Books and more. The Oregon themed cards are very popular in gift baskets used for out of town guests at weddings.

We are so excited to share this work with all of you and hope you pass along Sunny’s work to those who may be looking for unique invitations or other printed material for a wedding or event.  Thanks to Sunny with Puddle Jumpin’ Cards for sharing all your talents.

Family Portraits at Cathedral Park

Having photographed Kari & Mike’s wedding 5 years ago, it was a real treat to connect for some family portraits.  Its always an honor to work with our couples over the years and to capture moments that extend well beyond the wedding day.  For Kari and Mike, it was the latest additions to their family – Donavynn and Braedon.

To Kari & Mike:

I am so glad that we had a chance to connect and document your new family.  I am so extremely excited for the two of you and I look forward to many more photo sessions in the future.  See all of you soon!

Robyn & Mason | August 25, 2012

We are always excited to share a wedding we have photographed at Bridal Veil Lakes.  As many of you know, it is one of our favorite locations for a wedding.  The setting is absolutely gorgeous and the light is truly magical.

Robyn & Mason were surrounded by their closest friends and family as they exchanged their vows with beautiful music played by The String Beings.  Following the ceremony, guests walked toward the back side of the lake to gather for a large group photo.  It is one of my favorite ways to kick off cocktail hour!  Yard games and signature cocktails and wine made up for a wonderful time for guests to mingle and enjoy the stunning views offered at Bridal Veil Lakes.  A few guests even ventured out into canoes and rode around the lake.

Catering was provided by Devil’s Food and Escapade provided the incredible live music.  It made for one heck of a party.  A special thanks to Kelsey with Soiree Special Event Planning for coordinating the events of the day and to all the vendors who made Robyn & Mason’s wedding a huge success.

Lindsay & JR | August 19, 2012

We met Lindsay & JR while photographing Brandi & Toby’s wedding years ago.  It is always nice when a couple has a chance to see us work and then hires us to photograph their own wedding.  And we have had the opportunity to work with Lindsay & JR on a number of occasions.  We did a portrait session with them out at Kruger’s Farm, an engagement session at Hoyt Arboretum, a Save-the-Date session at our photo studio, and most recently at Camas Meadows for their wedding.

To begin their day, Lindsay & JR exchanged love letters with each other.  It was such a sweet way to share their feelings prior to officially tying the knot.  We used golf carts to escort the couple down to a more private area for their first moment and then had family and wedding party members join us for portraits.

Guests were seated for the ceremony and Lindsay made her grand entrance by riding in on a Mercedes convertible that was driven by her father.  It was a really nice touch to the ceremony.  Then, when Lindsay approached the alter, JR was “iced.”  The officiant handed JR a bottle of Vodka that he then had to drink all at once.  Nicely done JR!

Following the ceremony, the couple rode off in the convertible to sign their marriage license and then join their guests for the reception.  The reception was beautifully decorated and accented by the most incredible cake table designed by Amy with One Divine Party.

I wish every wedding I photographed went as smoothly and as effortlessly as Lindsay & JR’s and that is due in large part to Kristina and her team with Niella’s Special Events.  Thank you so much Kristina for all your help throughout the day.  You are your team are total rock stars!

Speaking of rock stars…  Beat Frequency sang a song to Lindsay & JR during the reception.  They are wildly talented and were recently selected by Christina Aguilera on The Voice.  We look forward to seeing how they do on the show!

With Lindsay being a cheerleader for the Portland Winterhawks and many of her friends being dancers and performers, the dance floor remained quite active throughout the evening.  There were many dance-offs and incredible dance moves.  Congratulations to Lindsay & JR!

Jessica & Jeff | August 18, 2012

The word that kept coming up at Jessica & Jeff’s wedding was “epic.”  And it perfectly describes their day.  From the elaborate details and gorgeous location to the enormous wedding party and incredible reception – the entire day was epic.

Jessica and Jeff personally made many of the details including the chuppah and the custom wall which included images of close loved ones.  Scrumptuous wood fired pizza was provided by Girasole Pizza Company and A Sound Choice Entertainment  kept the party going well into the evening.  A special thanks to My Bartender for all the liquid encouragement and to all the vendors who worked together to make Jessica & Jeff’s wedding an epic success.  Thank you to Stephanie with Steph Studios for providing 2nd photographer coverage as well.

Congratulations to Jessica & Jeff!
