Every so often we like to do a vendor spotlight to highlight the talents of a particular vendor in the wedding industry. This vendor spotlight is on Puddle Jumpin’ Cards. Sunny, the creative genius behind Puddle Jumpin’ Cards, creates incredibly unique custom hand carved and block printed invitations.
With Portland being a market that is saturated with creative types, I wanted to highlight the incredible work that Sunny creates. It really stands out from the crowd.
We recently met up with Sunny in our photo studio to document a selection of her work. We sat down with her and had a chance to learn even more about her process and her work:
Paul: Can you talk about your process a bit – from conceptualization to end product?
Sunny: When I first meet with an engaged couple, we go over their vision and toss ideas around about their custom design. I like to think of the invitation as a blank canvas, and I paint the picture of the couple’s personality and style while setting the tone of their wedding. I send proofs and we refine them until the design is exactly how they imagined it to be (or more)! I love it when the couple gives me creative freedom to explore unique ways of bringing their ideas to life.
Paul: At what time during the wedding planning process should a couple contact you? In other words, what is a reasonable turnaround time for you?
Sunny: A couple should contact me very soon after their wedding date, venue and approximate invitation count is decided on. When it gets to be 7 months before your wedding and you haven’t decided on an invitation designer, it’s time to crack the whip and get on it!
Paul: What is unique about the product you offer to couples?
Sunny: I specialize in hand carved block prints which is a unique process to offer couples. Each invitation is hand printed after the custom block is carved out. The couple even gets to keep the block after their wedding! I like the idea of framing the block along with the printed invitation. It makes really lovely art for their new home together.
Paul: You primarily make invitations – do you also make table markers, save the dates, etc?
Sunny: I also create wedding day paper goods, such as place cards, escort cards, table numbers, programs and menus. I can design shower and rehearsal dinner invitations as well. It’s fun to tie in one’s theme, color and style in all their paper elements!
Paul: What is your artistic background?
Sunny: I graduated from Northwest College of Art in the quaint town of Poulsbo, Washington. I have a BFA in Visual Communication with majors in fine art and design. My childhood was spent drawing on math papers and coloring on the walls. I love getting the chance to tie my fine art background into invitations by hand painting elements of the design.
Paul: Where can people see more of your work?
Sunny: Aside from wedding invitations, you can find my hand carved and printed card line on my website and at numerous local businesses around Portland, such as: Powell’s City of Books, New Seasons Markets, Kazoodles Toy Store, Oblation Papers and Press, Zim Zim Department Store, AllPort, Annie Bloom’s Books and more. The Oregon themed cards are very popular in gift baskets used for out of town guests at weddings.
We are so excited to share this work with all of you and hope you pass along Sunny’s work to those who may be looking for unique invitations or other printed material for a wedding or event. Thanks to Sunny with Puddle Jumpin’ Cards
for sharing all your talents.
