Vicki & Nick | July 23, 2011

Vicki and I have known each other for many years, so when she contacted me about photographing her wedding, I was very honored and excited.  In addition, as many of you already know, the Lan Su Chinese Garden is among my favorite venues in downtown Portland.  With Nadia, owner of Creations by Ly, as her maid of honor, Vicki was guaranteed a successful event.

The day started off at Vicki & Nick’s house in the Pearl District.  It was the perfect location for Vicki to get ready with the guys getting ready just around the corner at the Inn at Northrup Station.  We found a private location at the Lan Su Chinese Garden for Vicki and Nick to see each other for the first time.  It was so fun to be there to witness that moment.  Neither Vicki nor Nick could keep from smiling or laughing.

Following the ceremony, food stations were setup throughout the garden for guests to enjoy.  Art of Catering provided the food and it was absolutely scrumptious.  Background music was provided by Boy & Bean.   I receive a lot of requests from couples looking for good live music and this trio is certainly a great option.  And for wedding cakes, check out the incredible creation by Laura, one of Nick’s sisters.  Rumor has it that it took 60 hours to make!  And boy was it worth it!

Thank you to all the wonderful vendors for making Vicki and Nick’s wedding a huge success and thank you to Vicki and Nick for this wonderful opportunity.  I wish the two of you all the best and can’t wait to share the rest of your wedding photos with you this Friday!  Until then, here is a sneak peek:

Robin & Neal | July 17, 2011

My initial wedding consultation with Robin and her mom at The Bridal Loft was very fun and energetic.  Robin’s eyes were filled with excitement as she discussed the details of her day.  There were so many things to talk about and the one topic that kept coming up from time to time was a concern about the weather.  Robin and her mom just really wanted a bright sunny day with no rain.  I reassured them that since their wedding was after the 4th of July, they were pretty much guaranteed no rain.  That seems to be the cut off point each year.  Once we hit the 4th of July, the rest of the weekends are filled with perfect weather.

Well, this year was a little different but in a really good way.  I remember the morning of Robin and Neal’s wedding very well.  While the weather report had shown nice clear skies just a few days prior, the forecast changed dramatically and for the day of the wedding only showers were predicted.  Nothing but rain.  I couldn’t believe it!  And as I drove out to the McMenamins Grand Lodge for the wedding, the rain got heavier and heavier.  I arrived to the venue early to scout out various locations to see where we may be able to photograph even if the rain persisted.  I put together my game plan and met up with Kiki, the wedding planner, to discuss our options for the day.  The weather conditions were clearly on everyone’s mind and we wanted to work together to make everything happen.  The plan was to continue with the original idea of having the wedding outdoors but if the weather remained the same to move the ceremony underneath the tent where the reception was set.  The great thing about McMenamins Grand Lodge is that there are a number of covered areas with great backgrounds to enable photos to occur outdoors even if it is raining.  I utilized those locations to their fullest.  And ever so slowly, the rain began to let up and become more and more of a light drizzle.

The ultimate decision was to move the ceremony underneath the tent.  Within minutes, thanks to Kiki and the entire staff at McMenamins Grand Lodge, umbrellas were deployed, a tent tunnel was erected for the wedding party to enter, tables were moved to make room for the ceremony, and large pieces of carpet were laid down to cover areas where people would be standing.  It was a huge undertaking and one that was executed flawlessly.  Guests were seated at tables surrounding the couple making for a very intimate wedding ceremony with Robin’s uncle officiating.  Once Robin and Neal were married, in classic Oregon fashion, the rain stopped and out came the sun.  The timing was perfect.  We had plenty of time to do even more portraits outside and of course I used the opportunity to incorporate our signature clear umbrella for some cute photos.

Congratulations to Robin and Neal and thank you to everyone for making their wedding day such a unique experience.

Check out Robin and Neal’s sneak peek slideshow.

Staci & Ludwing | July 10, 2011

I love photographing weddings at Edgefield.  The location combines Oregon’s natural beauty with McMenamins‘ signature style.  From the original buildings that are carefully restored to the great food and drink, Edgefield has it all.  There is an endless supply of great locations to photograph throughout the property.

Staci & Ludwing exchanged their vows during a very intimate ceremony on the grounds of the Administrator’s House.  Their children were part of the wedding party and did such a great job escorting their newest sister down the aisle.  Following the ceremony, Staci and Ludwing took off with me for some couple portraits throughout the grounds.  I love having the opportunity to spend additional time with just the couple.  It allows for more creative and playful portraits to be captured.  Time and time again, these are the images that become couples’ favorites.  A special thanks to Amy and her team with Blush Bridal Events for making everything so effortless.

Congratulations to Staci & Ludwing!
